STARS – Modular Impro [with patch notes]
in collaboration with Bologna UNESCO City of Music
Vincenzo Scorza, Andy Morello, Omri Cohen
Nine explained sonic journeys in the world of modular synthesizers, released on a monthly basis
CHECK OUT BELOW!
Nine short improvisations in "no talk" video format, based on modular systems for sound synthesis, each one dedicated to the exploration of a single patch. The nine videos, composed and performed – three each – by Vincenzo, Andy and Omri, are provided with an overlaid commentary (patch notes), detailing the technical-practical side of the implementation on the device, with reference to signals routing, synthesis techniques, creative solutions.
The project takes inspiration from the research Full modular impro with patch notes, that Vincenzo has been carrying out since October 2020, a project aimed to produce 88 shorts modular impro jams, each one arbitrary dedicated to a constellation of the sky. But now, Vincenzo expand his horizon with the involvement of two artists: together with the creator and curator of STARS, Andy Morello and Omri Cohen will compose and perform the improvisational series.
A final step will be a talk / performance that will be scheduled at the interdisciplinary contemporary arts festival perAspera (Bologna, September 2021), to take stock of the project, the networks of artistic collaborations activated and the developments of future dialogues within the "modular community".
Vincenzo Scorza – also know as Vinx Scorza – focuses his research on the meeting point between music and new technologies, giving life to projects based on live electronics and instant composing, which in the most recent developments investigate the behavior of modular synthesizers. Totally immersed in the live dimension of the music, he boasts several participations in national and international experimental contexts. He graduated in Electronic Music at the “G.B. Martini” Conservatory in Bologna and in Performing Arts (Music) at the University of Bologna, he is also a teacher of electronic music production. Activator of many artistic experiences, over time he has started several musical projects – soloists or in synergy with other artists. He is also an audio technician and a sound designer for experimental theater companies, becoming a finalist in his category for the 2018 Ubu Prizes.
Andy Morello is involved in electronic music, productions and remixes, since a long time. His research is aimed at finding the link between improvisation and programming. Either playing live or in his studio, Andy travels through rarefaction, granularization, dub, techno and experimentation: a sort of extemporaneous sound installation, created on the spot, unique. From 2017, Andy is deeply passionate to modular synthesis, starting from 2018 the Milano Modulare community, coordinating in 2019 the realization of the first modular day in Milan “Connessioni a modular journey” realized in partnership with Machine Jockey and LePark. Never exhausted, Andy opens in 2020 the Voltage Creative Studio, a recording studio dedicated to musicians, vocalists and producers, which aims to become a reference point both for Milano modular community and for “modular based” productions and sound design.
Omri Cohen is an artist and a great popularizer based in Germany. He fell in love with the modular environment and modular synthesis through his work with VCV Rack, a free and open-source virtual modular synthesizer. Soon enough, Omri's setup included semi-modular synths and a Eurorack case. Combining virtual and hardware, Omri adds also acoustic instruments into the mix like a flute, kalimba, piano, and more. He published a very large number of sounds, capitalizing a great amount of reputation as artist and communicator.
